Vegetarianism is not merely a method of eating, but a holistic way of life. In his book 'Vegetarianism', Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar explains that a person’s diet has a deep impact on the body, mind, and spiritual development. According to him, purity in food leads to purity in thoughts.
Based on yogic philosophy, Sarkar classifies food into three categories—sattvic, rajasic, and tamasic. Sattvic food, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts, brings calmness and mental clarity. Rajasic food creates excessive stimulation, while tamasic food, such as meat or stale items, produces dullness and restlessness in the mind. For spiritual practice, sattvic food is considered the most suitable.
From an ethical point of view, vegetarianism supports the principle of non-violence. When human beings can obtain sufficient nutrition from plant sources without harming animals, killing animals for food becomes unnecessary. Thus, vegetarianism strengthens feelings of compassion and kindness.
From a scientific perspective, vegetarianism is also considered beneficial for health. It may help reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, and several other illnesses. Moreover, it plays an important role in protecting the environment and ensuring balanced use of natural resources.
